We have seen in last 10/15 years how many foreign airlines asked for landing in madurai and successive Ministers response. MOCA will never agree to include new POC and if at all they agree it will be for few places which are their favorite such as Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kasi, Cannanore etc., Therefore nothing to rejoice as far as I am concerned. I will open a bottle only when literally foreign airlines such as Flydown, Ethihad, Oman Air etc touches down. Till then no.

We often see in SSC-TRZ/TP that heated-up arguments end with one single point. That is TRZ is one of the few profit-making airports in India. To understand this, a little comparison with loss-making airports (especially CJB and IXM) is inevitable for a better understanding. I hope the Moderators understand this.

TBH, It raises quite a few eyebrows that how it could make profitable while CJB, which is handling close to double the number of passengers handled by TRZ, is loss-making. Our initial thought was that it may be because it handles more narrowbodies than other two airports and also because intl passengers pay more tax than dom passengers. But we weren’t satisfied with that.

As usual, to bring out the fact, MK filed RTI asking P&L statement of all three airports for past five years. It threw quite a few surprises in our face about why and how TRZ became profitable.

To begin with, RTI revealed that TRZ made a profit only in 2015-16 against what was being projected here that it was making profit for the past three years quoting APD. We are surprised that how an APD could get so wrong and conveyed the wrong message whereas the statements in AAI records say it was loss-making. Everybody would certainly go for RTI reply rather than relying upon APD interview, that too published by TOIlet paper.

2011 - 12 = (-10.99) Cr

2012 - 13 = (-19.45) Cr

2013 - 14 = (-2.80) Cr

The main reason for profit in 2015 - 16 :

As you see above, among those main contributors, the highest is UDF (User Development Fee). A short description on UDF

"User Development Fee (UDF) is levied at the Indian airports under Rule 89 of Aircraft Rules, 1937 as a measure to increase revenues of the airport operator. The UDF is levied to bridge any revenue shortfall so that the airport operator is able to get a fair rate of return on investment. The quantum of UDF varies from airport to airport. The rate of UDF at airports is determined by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) for major airports and by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) for non-major airports."

Point to be noted is among IXM, CJB and TRZ, only TRZ has UDF revenue. Other airports only have PSF (Passenger Service Fee) which TRZ also collects. Even after having a major extra revenue in form of UDF for many years, TRZ was able to register profit only in 2015-16. Now comes another doubt. UDF collection doesn't have much difference between last five years. Yet they are able to register profit in 2015 - 16. How?

The answer is LPH (Landing, Parking and Housing) charges. As you can see the red figure of LPH in above picture, LPH revenue was almost doubled compare to previous year. LPH is based on mostly, but not limited to, aircraft movement. Now, looking at the aircraft movement for both FY, 2014-15 had 9694 a/c movements whereas 2015-16 had 10430 movements. The increase was just 7.6% whereas the revenue increased to almost double. I believe, they have increased the fee of LPH significantly in 2015-16 which resulted in the profitability of TRZ. I will be happy to agree if there is any other reason for the doubled-revenue with proper reasoning.

Do note that these UDF and LPH are passed on to passengers only. AAI can be happy that they are making profit out of an airport, but from passengers point of view, it is extra burden to bear. UDF can be justified if they provide extra facility than those airports which doesn't collect UDF. AFAIK, there is no major difference in facilities for passengers compare to IXM or CJB to justify those huge collection of UDF.

It is upto the readers to decide to be happy that their city airport is profitable or to be sad that there is extra burden for passengers compare to other airports without any extra facility.

Bigger planes boost air traffic through Madurai


Passenger and cargo movement will increase further: Airport Director

With introduction of bigger aircraft by the latest entrant Indigo and Jet Airways from Madurai to different destinations, the number of passengers using Madurai Airport and the movement of cargo is bound to increase soon.

Addressing the executive committee meeting of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) here on Monday, Airport Director V.V. Rao said the increasing number of departures had resulted in a 26% increase in number of passengers using Madurai airport in 2016-17 when compared to 2015-16. “We have five bigger aircraft operating from Madurai airport since March. We expect the increase in number of passengers using the airport by at least 17% this year,” he said.

Stating that the new terminal building had almost all facilities for passengers, he said the two restaurants would soon be commissioned. The fifth childcare facility in the airport was recently put up at the arrival hall.

“Drinking water facility and free weighing machines have been installed outside the terminal hall for the benefit of passengers and visitors. These facilities are not seen in any other airport,” he said.

Runway extension

Mr. Rao said that after the State government handed over 615 acres of land under acquisition to the airport, the runway would be extended to 12,500 feet as against the existing 8,000 feet. This will help in handling wide-bodied aircraft.

Besides, the Airports Authority of India plans to construct a new air traffic control tower, new fire station and new staff quarters.

Cargo facility has all arrangements, including a new x-ray machine. “It will be commissioned upon getting security clearance,” he said.

During the interaction, MADITSSIA president L. Murari wanted Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to operate air-conditioned buses to the airport from city.

Members also complained about men manning the toll gate for car parking insisting on payment of parking charges while entering the airport though for dropping of passengers within stipulated time there was no such charge.

Besides, they wanted to rearrange the baggage carousel to prevent baggages from getting damaged.

MADITSSIA secretary K.P. Murugan and treasurer V. Senthi Kumar were present.

as seen Madurai airport is certainly bound to get r more services / more destinations and have a stable growth in revenue and passenger traffic. kudos ! hope AAI takes up the runway extension work too very soon.
