In a significant development and what can be construed as a major boost for the Madurai International Airport in the future, the airport has announced that it has handled more than one lakh passengers in April for the first time ever. The Madurai airport stood fourth after Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy when it came to handling passengers. But, the April numbers took it past Trichy by a margin of 3,000 passengers. Not to be outdone, enthusiasts in the city took to social media and proudly flaunted the achievement of the airport.

Madurai airport director V V Rao said the reason behind the increase in numbers was due to the operation of more domestic flights. The number of passengers handled by the airport in April, 2017 was a whopping 1,20,554 with an overall load factor of 86%, which is percentage of filled seats.

Whereas, Trichy airport handed only 1.17 lakh passengers in the same month. For Madurai airport, it is a steep increase, since only 83,570 passengers were handled in April last year.
"A large number of people started using Madurai airport since ticket fares for Chennai were available from Rs 1,500. Due to competition, the fares have come down. The airport also provides a good experience for passengers due to the improved facilities. Recently, we started a duty-free shop which is also getting good response," he said.

Past president of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, V S Manimaran, said, "It is a big moment for Madurai airport as it enters the elite club of airports handing one lakh plus passengers in a month."

Domestic passenger sector is the strength of Madurai airport, which is quite evident from the fact that nearly 76% of the total passengers handled in April were domestic fliers. Whereas, almost 92% of the passengers handled by Trichy are international passengers. Madurai lacks international connectivity and hence losing out to Trichy airport by a big margin in terms of international passengers.

Of the total 1.20 lakh passengers in Madurai airport in April, as many as 67,475 travelled to Chennai; 11,468 to Hyderabad; 9,316 to Mumbai; 4,436 to Delhi and 3,366 to Bengaluru. At present, domestic flights from Madurai are available for various destinations like Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.

According to Madurai Travel Club, the absence of direct international connectivity from Madurai, is being cashed in by the Trichy airport. It has estimated that around 20 to 30% of international passengers using Chennai airport and 30 to 40% international passengers using Trichy airport are from Madurai and southern districts.

Manimaran said that international connectivity is available only to Colombo and Dubai. As the bilateral air service agreement (BASA) is available only with Sri Lanka, no other foreign operator except those from Sri Lanka, is able to operate in Madurai. There is a big demand for direct flights to countries like Malaysia, Singapore and many Gulf countries, he added.

At a time when Madurai airport is getting busier by the day, it is mired with delays in implementing facilities. The international cargo facility is yet to become operational, despite the airport notified as customs airport several years ago.

With things falling in place in the later part of 2016, officials had assured that the cargo facility will become operational by April 2017. Even after two months have passed after the deadline, it is yet to see the light of day.

Also, the land acquisition to the tune of 615 acres for runaway expansion work which was proposed back in 2008, is progressing at a snail's pace. The runway is planned be expanded to 12,500 feet from the present 7,500, which will enable landing of bigger flights.

Industrial bodies in Madurai say that the infrastructure facilities available at present may not be enough to handle the increasing number of passengers. President of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce, N Jagatheesan said, "The present terminal can handle only 250 outbound and 250 inbound passengers at a time. At a time when Trichy and even Tuticorin airports are going for terminal building expansion, Madurai is lagging behind," he said.

Exporters say that due to the absence of an international cargo facility, the direct flight from Madurai to Dubai goes with three to four tonnes of empty cargo space. Once the facility comes in place, it will not only help flight operators to operate more profitably, but also help the local exporters.

"Around 250kg of fruits, vegetables, garments and flowers from Madurai are being exported to Gulf countries every month. In the absence of the facility, exporters are forced to use either Trichy or Thiruvananthapuram airports," opined an exporter seeking anonymity.

Madurai airport director V V Rao said that BCS is expected to take place soon and cargo movement will start in a month time after the inspection. He also said the space available in the terminal building is enough at present.

Now srilankan have changed 3 evening flight to 3 morning flight and removed afternoon flights from the booking system.

Also modified their schedule page with 3 morning flight instead of 3 evening.
