I doubt this... because Trichy peoples will surely go against if this decision is made! They will not ready to share their seats with Madurai.

Chennai-Guruvayur Express, the only express train to halt at Koodal Nagar, leaving the station.

It has been more than a decade since a suggestion was put forth to upgrade Koodal Nagar Railway Station as an additional stoppage for all trains touching Madurai Junction. The idea was to minimise the burden of road traffic around the junction and provide a rail halt for travellers from north Madurai.

The logic behind the suggestion was to have Koodal Nagar as the Mambalam of Madurai so that there will be no need for passengers from north Madurai to cross the Vaigai. Traffic on the arterial Alagarkoil Road and the Albert Victor Bridge turns chaotic in the morning and evening when more than two trains reach or depart from Madurai at almost the same time. Once a Mambalam-like halt was provided, Koodal Nagar could well transform into the Tambaram of Madurai, it was believed.

But the station, despite having a goods yard and a container depot in its contiguity, remains lonely. Today, 52 trains pass through the station every day. Of them, seven, including the Chennai-Guruvayur Express, halt here. On an average, 30 to 35 passengers use the station daily. In the absence of an advance booking facility for trains, there are no queues at the station. An odd autorickshaw is parked beyond the railway line to pick up passengers. A person alighting at Koodal Nagar has to call a friend or relative to pick him up. Or Station Master T. R. Jothilingam arranges for transport by calling an autorickshaw over phone.

In the absence of proper indicators, one has to enquire with the residents of nearby Railar Nagar to reach the station. One has to take a detour from one of the ends of the Fatima College overbridge. The approach road, which leads to the Container Corporation of India's inland container depot, is in a pathetic condition due to the poor patronage for the facility. The other road, from the Railar Nagar side, goes up to the station building after crossing a railway line.

With electrification of the double-track between Dindigul and Madurai expected to be completed soon, Station Master is confident that more passenger amenities could be provided for the station which now has two platforms, an overbridge, four lines for passenger trains and five lines for goods wagons. But reservation counters, toilet, lighting, proper approach road and drinking water facilities should be provided at the station if it were to be upgraded.

K. Muthiah, a resident of Railar Nagar and a consumer activist, points out that the demand to halt trains at Koodal Nagar is long pending. A halt could be provided at least for “down trains,” he says. Other residents concur that traffic congestion in the city could be minimised by providing a stop for express trains.

By laying an approach road at the end of Koodal Nagar, access could be gained to Krishnapuram Colony, Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Anaiyur and Sellur. But railway officials point to a technical difficulty in halting express trains at Koodal Nagar, which is in close proximity to Madurai Junction. “A halt will mean a delay of at least 10 minutes,” a railway official said. An added disadvantage is the fact that except Pandian and Vaigai all other express trains, which originally started from Madurai, have been extended down south.
