மதுரை பைபாஸ் ரோடு ஆறு வழிச்சாலையாகிறது. இதற்காக ரூ.15 கோடி ஒதுக்கீடு பெற்று, நெடுஞ்சாலைத்துறை பணியை துவங்கவுள்ளது. பணியை நேர்த்தியாக மேற்கொள்ள முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார்.

மதுரையில் 200 அடி அகலம் கொண்ட ஒரே ரோடு பைபாஸ். தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலை ஆணையம் பொறுப்பில் இருந்தது. இதை பராமரிப்பதாக கூறி மாநகராட்சி நிர்வாகம் 2007 ல் எடுத்தது. ரோட்டின் இருபுறமும் ஆக்கிரமிப்புகள் செய்து கடைகள் நடத்த தனியார்களுக்கு மாநகராட்சி ஒப்புதல் வழங்கியது. இருபுற சர்வீஸ் ரோடுகளில் காய்கறி மார்க்கெட் நடத்தவும் அனுமதித்தது. ஆக்கிரமிப்பாளர்களால் பைபாஸ் 40 அடி ரோடானது.

'தினமலர்' செய்தி எதிரொலி
பைபாஸ் ரோட்டின் தற்போதைய அவலம் குறித்து 'தினமலர்' நாளிதழ் அரசின் கவனத்திற்கு கொண்டு சென்றது. இதன் எதிரொலியாக, மாநகராட்சி பொறுப்பில் இருந்த பைபாஸ், நெடுஞ்சாலைத் துறையிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டது.சென்னை அண்ணாசாலை போல பைபாஸ் ரோட்டை ஆறுவழிச்சாலையாக்க திட்டமிடப்பட்டு சாலையோர ஆக்கிரமிப்புகள் அகற்றப்பட்டன. வருவாய், நில அளவைத்துறைகள் மூலம் ரோட்டை அளவீடு செய்து குறியீடுகள் செய்யப்பட்டன. ஆறுவழிச்சாலையாக்க தேவைப்படும் நிதி, வரைபடம், திட்ட மதிப்பீடு தயாரித்து அரசு ஒப்புதலுக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டது.

ரூ.15 கோடி ஒதுக்கீடு
முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதா இதற்கு ஒப்புதலளித்து, ரூ.15 கோடி ஒதுக்கியுள்ளார். இதன்படி ஆரப்பாளையம் வைகை ஆறு காமராஜர் பாலத்தில் இருந்து பைபாஸ் ரோடு கருப்பணசுவாமி கோயில் வரை 3.08 கி.மீ., துாரம் ஆறுவழிச்சாலையாக மாற்றப்படுகிறது. தலா 5.50 மீட்டர் அகலத்தில் சர்வீஸ் ரோடுகள், தலா 10.50 மீட்டர் அகலத்தில் மூன்று வரிசை கொண்ட பிரதான ரோடு, நடுவில் தடுப்புச்சுவர் உயரத்தை ஆறு அடியாக உயர்த்தவும், நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படவுள்ளது.

சென்னை அண்ணாசாலையையடுத்து, மதுரை பைபாஸ் ரோடு ஆறுவழிச்சாலையாக உள்ளதால், பணியை நேர்த்தியாகவும், சட்டசபை தேர்தல் அறிவிப்புக்கு முன்பாகவும் முடிக்க, நெடுஞ்சாலைத்துறைக்கு முதல்வர் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார்.

By default each and every project announced for madurai is a paper project only. Nothing happens except announcement. So no need to mention that " Another Paper Project".

This tender is much more exhaustive. Earlier they were inviting tenders for restaurant cum snack bar only. This tender covers total of 14 places within and outside the terminal building, where the awardee can open snack bar, coffee/tea vending machine, full fledged restaurant cum bar and so on. Practically the awardee will have monopoly over catering and related business in madurai terminal building. Exisiting operators of snack bar etc would have to vacate once their contract ends.

Hope this time restaurant plan will be materialized! Small correction, there are 20 locations which includes beverages vending machine.

Let this be a successful venture at Madurai airport, catering to all the needs of the passengers. hope it certainly will be a needful amenity yet also elevating the stature of our city's airport.

Rs. 30 crore down the drain and still future bleak for the bridge which has become more of a hindrance.

The issue over construction of a road overbridge (RoB) at Palanganatham, intended to connect Madakulam on one side and two arms at the other side connecting TVS Nagar and Jaihindpuram, appears to have created a consensus among the public, a rare act not often seen in many issues.

Ask anyone in the locality about the bridge and they invariably opine how public money had been wasted on an ill-planned project, under construction since 2010, costing more than Rs. 30 crore till now, and its future looking uncertain.

While the stretch connecting Madakulam to TVS Nagar has been completed, construction work on the arm connecting Jaihindpuram has been temporarily stopped due to legal issues. Though a few people use the completed stretch, it has not been declared open officially.


Good for walkers

Interestingly, the completed stretch has become a preferred destination for walkers in the mornings and evenings. “That is the only purpose the bridge serves. In the evenings, one can also see young couples chatting peacefully for long hours,” said S. Solaimalai (59), who is residing nearby. “The place was better off without the bridge. It is so badly planned that there will be no option for vehicles, particularly government buses, coming from TVS Nagar side to reach Tirupparankundram Road. There is no space to take a ‘U’ turn after getting off the bridge on the Madakulam side,” said a man running a workshop nearby.

Residents say the easiest solution could have been to just make the subway wider, which is now usable only by light motor vehicles as it is very narrow. “As the subway has a blind curve, accidents have become a routine affair. It also gets flooded during rain and becomes unusable for days together,” said K. Manikandan (38), a taxi driver.

Mr. Solaimalai added that even the completed stretch of the bridge witnessed accidents. “A few months ago, a motorcycle rider fell off the bridge and died as the parapet wall was not completed then,” he said, adding that absence of streetlights has made it risky to take the bridge at night.

Legal quagmire

Construction of the Jaihindpuram arm of the bridge, meanwhile, has got into legal quagmire as it involves partial or complete eviction of at least 55 houses. D. Lakshmanan (62), one of the residents who will lose a fraction of his 800 square feet property, said that while he had accepted the compensation, many had approached the court. The delay in the work has meant that even the paved road in the Jaihindpuram stretch that existed before has been damaged and rendered unusable.

“This stretch used to witness heavy traffic before the construction began. My business has also taken a huge blow now due to the delay,” said S. Narayanan (56), who is running a teashop.

He added that with a Tasmac outlet at the end of the road, which is almost deserted, the place had become a haven for antisocial elements at night.

M. Kannan, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor of Ward 91, however, denied the allegations that the bridge was ill-planned. “Had it been fully completed, people would have realised the benefits.” He said that efforts were made during the previous DMK regime. “Even the underground drainage and pipelines were shifted for the project. However, the present government has not shown interest as the project is the brainchild of the DMK,” he claimed.

When contacted, a senior official from Tamil Nadu Highways Department, which is executing the project with assistance from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), acknowledged that the project may not get completed in the near future.


Contract expired

While denying the opinion that the project did not benefit the public, he said that the idea was to remove the railway level-crossing, which was achieved. “The contract with the builder has expired owing to delay caused by the legal hurdle. A new tender has to be issued once the legal issues are sorted out, which is not expected to happen any time soon,” he said.

very pitiable. we can observe lack of planning and poor co-ordination from the oficers / authorities concerned has been the cause of this ill-fated , badly executed project. the concerned officers -in-charge should be held accountable , for squandering peoples money.

With chief minister J Jayalalithaa laying the foundation for the ring road in Madurai through video conferencing on Tuesday, work on the much awaited project will be taken up soon.

In December 2012, Rs200 crore was sanctioned for the expansion of the ring road from Mattuthavani to Kappalur, a 27 km stretch. The chief minister laid the foundation for the four-laning of the ring road, with a revised estimate of Rs 213.69 crore, on Tuesday. The ring road is used by vehicles going from Mattuthavani and Melur to Virudhunagar and other southern districts, bypassing the city. It is also provides a shorter access to the Madurai airport.

This road was earlier under the administration of Madurai Corporation, which collected toll at specific points. It was later handed over the highways department. Sources said work on expanding and four laning of the road started on Tuesday. The work will include widening of three bridges, one river and two railway overhead bridges on this stretch. The work has to be completed in two years, after which the Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation will fix the toll, to retrieve the amount it will spend on the work.

After Madurai Corporation gave up its ownership of this road, its condition has deteriorated drastically, resulting in a number of accidents on the stretch. Badly maintained toll gates with poor lighting are also causing many accidents on this stretch. Sources said land acquisition on this stretch had been completed and work would start immediately. However, road users who use it regularly say the government should ensure that the road is maintained, properly and provided with good lighting, even as the four laning is under way, to minimise accidents.

Madurai mayor V V Rajan Chellappa, collector K Veera Raghava Rao, Madurai east MLA Tamilarasan, highways superintending engineer Guruprasad, among others, were present.

The Ring Road ( does it even deserve to be called a road !) day by day has become damned, dilapidated and dangerous to all motorists. this road which is an instance of poor planning, bad design, worst executed has and is still wreaking more and more accidents, discomfort and disgrace to all the road users. the corrupt authorities of the Madurai Municipal Corporation, with the active and willing connivance of today's and previous ruling parties both the DMK and ADMK , had engaged in colossal scandals and embezzled crores of public funds , under the guise of collecting toll, without doing nothing worthy , either to upkeep/ maintain or upgrade this crucial route. the very purpose for which this road was formed has been defeated . this death road has of late become a nightmare for the hapless local motorists / commuters. though it was expected that this stretch of road would be taken over possession , by the NHAI , nothing is materialising. as usual the corporation / collector are paying no heed to this crucial problem. despite the Director , NHAI Projects Office situated in the vicinity of Integrated Bus stand , there is palpable inaction . when are the concerned authorities going to make it usable and road worthy again? the gross discrimination, negligence and criminal delay when everything concerned with the progress and development of Madurai is glaring and apparent , both from the SG and the CG. When will we have a respite?
