The possible announcement of Anna University is good. This is overdue. They should have announced it years back when they expanded initially. It is due to some politics, we are getting it only now.

Regarding the physical location, I hope they build it somewhere other than the Melur road/area. Most of the activities are happening in the Mattuthavani/Melur area. It is better to build this one either towards the MKU area or somewhere on the old Ring road area.

If it is built near the Airport area besides the ring road, it will be good I think.

FULFILLING A PROMISE:Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, M.K. Alagiri, laying foundation stone for the Advance Tooling and Plastics Product Development Centre, near Madurai on Saturday. .

MADURAI: Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri on Saturday laid the foundation stone for an Advanced Tooling and Plastics Product Development Centre at Idayapatti near here.

The cost of the Rs.25.50-crore project will be equally shared by the Centre and State government, Mr. Alagiri said. The State had given 16.55 acres and would provide basic amenities for the centre. The building would come up in two years.

Mr. Alagiri said that he felt proud for having fulfilled one of his poll promises by bringing the centre to Madurai Parliamentary constituency. A second government polytechnic in the district and a tractor manufacturing unit would come up at Ambalakaranpatti near Melur.

Unique venture

Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Bijoy Chatterjee, said the proposed centre would be unique; it would focus entirely on development of plastic products and tooling technology to provide technological support to plastic and related industries.

Automotive and consumer industries that were growing in southern India required highly skilled manpower and technical support in areas of plastics engineering and technology. These industries require a large number of moulds and dyes, which were presently being imported.

Courses offered

The centre would initially offer a three-year full-time diploma course in Plastics Mould Technology and a one-year post-diploma course in Plastics Mould Design. The number of students to be trained here would be increased to 600 in three years. B. Tech programmes would also be introduced, he said.

Mr. Alagiri also inaugurated the centre that would temporarily function from Mattuthavani.

Minister for Revenue, I. Periyasamy; Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu; Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare, A. Tamilarasi; Director General of the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology, S.K. Nayak; Madurai District Collector (in-charge), Dinesh Ponraj Oliver; and Sholavandan MLA P. Moorthy were among those who spoke.

^^ News about the same in Hindu:

The State Government has started the process of identifying land for establishing Anna University in Madurai.

On Friday, the Principal Secretary to Higher Education Department, K. Ganesan, had a meeting with the district administration during which he was briefed about the land available in Madurai Kamaraj University and also at Tiruvadavur near here.

The Secretary told Collector C. Kamaraj and District Revenue Officer Dinesh Ponraj Oliver that a minimum of 100 acres would be required for establishing the facility, keeping in view the current and future needs.

Mr. Ganesan, along with the Collector, visited Madurai Kamaraj University to inspect the land and held a discussion with Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel and other officials.

“The process of identifying a suitable land has started. It is still in a preliminary stage and I will come again to have a look at other sites also,” Mr. Ganesan told ‘The Hindu' after his meeting with officials at the university.

He asked the Collector and DRO to suggest few more options of sites. Availability of adequate Government land at Tiruvadavur was explained to him by the Collector.

AIMING FOR THE SKY: R. Karpaga Kumaravel (centre), Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, having a word with M.S.Palanichamy, former Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, at a meeting in Madurai on Thursday. S.Baskaran, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, is also seen.

Madurai Kamaraj University is pursuing a proposal to have an exclusive satellite and has initiated discussions with scientists of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

A preliminary meeting was held in this regard. Getting the Rs. 3-crore facility was the agenda for the coming year, Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel said here on Thursday.

]“My priority is to mobilise funds for this. We will form a technical committee comprising members from the Department of Science and Technology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, university faculty members and senior professors,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor was speaking at the valedictory function of the ‘Induction Programme for the newly appointed Assistant Professors.

Future plans

Listing out various future plans for the university, he said that another priority area will be to improve the university's ambience.

“The first stage of landscaping had been completed. Go-green campaign will be intensified and two banks — State Bank of India and Indian Bank — have agreed to contribute for the next round of landscaping,” he said.

He observed that good ambience is essential to make the people feel comfortable within the university premises.

More appointments

The next stage of recruitment will also be taken up. “What we did now was only backlog recruitment.

The next step is to fill up 11 University Grants Commission (UGC)-sanctioned posts, nine professor posts and 23 sanctioned posts in the Directorate of Distance Education,” he said.

Mr. Kumaravel stated that the recent recruitment of 89 Assistant Professors had given him “a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. Their selection was unanimous and there was no dissent. A transparent document was prepared and all the norms were followed.”

Appointments

The appointments were made strictly as per the Tamil Nadu G.O. and the UGC norms.

“It is easy to make allegations and criticism. But, I can only say that there was no deviation of norms,” he said.

S. Baskaran, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, who delivered a special address, had congratulated the Vice-Chancellor for completing the recruitment of new teachers “which was pending for a long time due to a variety of reasons.”

He urged the new Assistant Professors to follow student-centric teaching model and also learn to respect every student whatever be his ability or background.

M.S. Palanichamy, former Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, and P.B. Gopalakrishnan, Director, Academic Staff College, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
