Madurai Kamaraj University here is ready with a concrete proposal to set up a 100 KV solar energy system on its campus.

Tenders were called and a company was chosen. Kalyani Mathivanan, Vice-Chancellor, MKU, is now canvassing funds from the State Government and University Grants Commission for the project which is part of its Green Campus initiative.

In the first phase, the university is looking for funding of Rs.1 crore to install 100 solar street lights on the campus.

“The Green Campus Committee is meeting periodically to spearhead solar energy plans and we will start the works soon. Funding requirement particulars were submitted to the Finance Committee,” K. Pitchumani, Registrar in-charge, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

To save electricity bill

In the long run, the varsity will be able to save on its monthly electrical bill, which currently averages Rs 15 lakh.

S. Kannan, chairperson in-charge, School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, said that the university is keen to install solar panels across the campus by taking advantage of the 30 per cent subsidy and encouragement given by the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2012.

Waste water recycling, prevention of water stagnation and integrated environmental planning are among the other priorities.

Dr. Pitchumani said that solar heaters will be introduced in varsity hostels. ... 461303.ece

Govt is planning to invite new design/architure for the proposed Tamil academy. The new architectural design should reflect the langauge and tamil culture.

I dont know how long they will plan (Araitha Mavai Araikum Karium) and modify. This project and Tamil University projects were announced by MGR at the time of world tamil conference. Only 26 years have gone and still this project is pending whereas Tamil University has come up and functioning well.
Tender document link : ... ai_rfp.pdf

^^ How about posting further updates of this project here since it sounds like Tamil Research facility?

Also INO discussions could be done in this thread in my opinion since it would be a High Energy Physics giant research facility according to reports and fund volume.

Long wait for Tamil Sangam building to end
The long wait for a complex for the World Tamil Sangam is going to end as the state government has taken the initiative to construct the building at a cost of 25 crore on 14.15 acres of land allotted way back in 1982 when M G Ramachandran was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

The dream project of MGR, which could not be completed due to various reasons will have its final shape in two years. The government has now set in motion the construction of the master complex adjacent to the Government Law College in the city. Tenders have been floated by the government and March 27 has been set as the deadline for submitting the bids. It has been stipulated to complete the building in 18 months of time since the inception.

The building is expected to turn into another landmark in Madurai, which is known for its contribution to Tamil language with three ancient Tamil Sangams. The state government has sought urban designers and cultural consultants for planning, designing, preparation of estimates and supervision of design implementation of the master complex. The government touts the World Tamil Sangam campus to be aesthetically pleasing, recreationally appealing, techno-economically feasible and visually pleasing.

Although Tamil scholars are not aware of the details or the functions of the World Tamil Sangam complex, they expect it to render service to Tamil.

"It is a welcome move," said Tamil Annal, a Tamil scholar in Madurai. Officials said that a high-level committee would be formed to discuss the action plans. For the establishment of the sangam, the government has already passed a government order to appoint eight staff members to carry out ground works.

An official said that a corpus fund of 100 crore by the Tamil development department has been transferred to the accounts of 'Ulagath Tamizh Sangam' from Ulagath Tamizh Semmozhi Tolkoppiar peravai. A sum of 75 crore has been converted into non-interest earning deposit. For the administrative expenditure, the government will pay a grant of 23 lakh per year for the sangam.

Tamil scholars hoped that the World Tamil Sangam would act as a pivotal centre in coordinating with Tamil departments in various universities and assisting their research activities. ... 872350.cms

^^ ^^ The scheduling (total of 18 months) according to the tender document is

Design detailing and estimation - 2 months

Bid process for identification of contractor - 2 months

Execution - 14 months

So, tender inviting bids for construction should be coming in another 60 to 65 days.

Lets see if they stick to the schedule.

Thanks for sharing the update Madurai Guy.

Because of their management, I don't like PRIST Group.

My bet is on the Sairam group who have procured 150 acres (really big site for an engineering college) for their Engineering college project.

HC directs affiliation to Alagiri family run engg college

In a relief to an engineering college run by the family of former union minister M K Alagiri, waging a two-year long legal battle for its functioning, the Madras High Court today directed the Anna University to provide provisional affiliation to it for 2013-14.

Justice S Manikumar of Madurai Bench of HC was allowing a petition by the Daya Engineering College at Sivarakottai here, owned by the Alagiri Educational Trust, with a cost of Rs 25,000 to be paid by the Registrar of Annar University.

In a hard hitting Judgement, he said once it suffered an adverse order in this court, and the same was ultimately confirmed by the Supreme Court,"It is incumbent on the part of the university to respect the orders... But in my opinion respect to the courts' orders is conspicuously absent."

He also set aside the university's May 20 last order denying affiliation to the college, because it looked as if it did not function.

The legal battle for affiliation by the college began since its inception in 2011.

The university rejected affiliation after finding three deficiencies during an inspection in July 2011, which were later rectified.

However, even after this, affiliation was not granted, prompting the college to allege 'malafide intention' by the university.

The high court had on June 29 last year directed the university to provide affiliation to the college as per law on or before July 7, 2012. ... 812_1.html

The district administration has decided to change school timings to ease traffic congestion during peak hours. However, there will be no blanket order applicable to all schools.

“The timings will be changed on a case-by-case basis after studying the location of each school, its student strength and the traffic situation in the locality,” Collector Anshul Mishra told the heads of over 250 schools here on Friday.

Addressing the meeting at the Collectorate, he said that school managements should convince parents of the need to advance the timing by 30 to 45 minutes, which was in the interest of the children.

“There is a great rush in the mornings because school and office timings clash. Schoolchildren are travelling by footboard on government buses. A dangerous situation persists, especially in the city limits, and we have to address this issue urgently,” he said.

The collector said he was aware of the inconvenience to parents and children. “We have no other option. Most of the big cities have similar arrangements. We must also follow suit,” he pointed out.

He suggested that schools could consider fixing a particular time for students in primary classes and a different timing for others. But almost school heads expressed their reluctance to change their school timings.

“Don’t try to shoot down our proposal outright. We don’t want to force things on you. But you must understand that we have a tough situation to deal with. You can see that even parents get stuck in traffic snarls on the way to drop their children in schools,” the collector told them.

He informed the gathering that a final decision on changing school timings will be taken within a week in consultation with police officials in charge of maintaining road traffic.

He urged the school heads to get back to him after discussing the issue with the parents community.
