Dejected over not able to get a seat for your children in the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Narimedu and Thiruparankundram? Here's a solution. Kendriya Vidyalaya III has been proposed for Madurai district and the school will start functioning from the academic year 2014-15 in Idayapatti near Varichur, around 25 kms from the city. The efforts of the higher officers in Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and officials from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan have yielded fruition to establish the third campus in Madurai district.

Initially, classes from first standard to fifth standard have been proposed which will be upgraded by one class every year. To start with, 100 students will be admitted. Since the KV III campus is coming in the 80 acre campus of the ITBP, the infrastructure facilities such as auditorium, playground and canteen would readily be available to the students.

Gopinath Choyi, commandant, 45th battalion of ITBP in Idayapatti confirmed the proposal. "We have sent a proposal to the KVS and an inspection has also been done by the concerned officials subsequently. We were told not to wait until permanent structures are established. Hence, the school will start functioning from April 2014. This upcoming school will be a boon to the ITBP police officers' wards and for the people from nearby villages," he said.

C Muthiah, principal KV I, said that there has always been a requirement for one more campus in Madurai. "For the 2013-14 admission we had received more than 1600 applications to fill 160 seats. The wards of ITBP officers and villagers around Idayapatti would be hugely benefited out of the proposed school," he said.

^^ I agree and appreciate the govt's long term vision but plucking National Law School that was proposed for Madurai and establishing it in her Constituency which has top institutions in almost every field except Medicine is ridiculous and I couldn't digest it still..:bash:

Madurai hoopsters get new court

Quote:
The basketball lovers in the city are jubilant over the new basketball court which the city corporation opened for public use on Monday. The civic body has constructed the court in the heart of the city at the N M R Subburaman Park.

The Rs 35-lakh project include uplifting of the park with walking pathways, fountain, lights and a net practising facility for cricket. The basketball court here is equipped with floodlight facility so that the tournaments could be held in the evenings.

V V R Rajsatyen, the president of Madurai District Basketball Association, said the basketball court within the park is the best venue for the game in the city. "In fact, we have been proposing this idea to previous corporation regimes but the current corporation considered our demand in establishing the facility," he said. The city corporation also has taken the recommendations of the association while constructing the court. They will be organising many tournaments, preferably club events, on the court in the coming days, he said. "We have also requested the corporation to provide galleries and dressing rooms for the players and they have agreed. Once such facilities are in place, the court will be the best place for organising tournaments," he said. Association sources said that the Madurai Kamaraj University's inter-college tournaments will be held on the court next month.

R Sekar, vice president of the association, said the interest in basketball is on rise in the city and the new facility will be a boost to the game. "There are many gifted players in the city and one more court will be useful for the players," he commented.

At present, there are two synthetic basketball courts in the Race Course grounds under the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATN). "The courts are fully occupied in the evenings by sports hostel students and the public. Many college students also utilise the courts at Race Course grounds. "The municipal court will be helpful to the students and public," said K Raja, SDA district coach.

MKU's vice Chancellor, Kalyani Mathivanan inaugurated the court and the park in the evening. Mayor V V Rajan Chellappa and corporation commissioner R Nanthagopal were present. After the inauguration, basketball matches were held on the court.

Work on Rs 1350 crore Neutrino Observatory begins in Bodi hills

Quote:
The foot hill of Bodi West hills in Theni district in southern Tamil Nadu is abuzz with activity as the work on establishing the Rs 1,350 crore India - based Neutrino Observatory (INO), one of the most ambitious projects of the scientific community of the country, has commenced.

"The pre-project works of infrastructure development has begun. The preliminary work would be completed in four to five months and establishment of the laboratory would begin. The observatory would be ready in five years," Naba K Mondal, INO spokesperson and physicist with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research ( TIFR), a nodal agency for the implementation of the project, told TOI over phone from Mumbai.

INO, expected to place India in the league of US and Russia that are presently involved in neutrino research, envisages establishing the observatory in a cavern dug at the bottom of a peak in Ambarappar hill at Pottipuram village near Thevaram in the reserve forest area. A 1.9 km long tunnel would be dug to access the observatory in the cavern while smaller caverns would be dug to facilitate experiments. About 26 hectares of revenue land have been acquired near the entrance to the proposed tunnel.

A magnetised iron calorimeter (ICAL) detector weighing about 50,000 tonnes, one of the largest in the world, would be installed in the cavern to study the neutrinos.

The area has been cleared and construction of a compound wall with barbed wire fencing had commenced at a cost of Rs 2.6 crore. Mondal said that the imperative was to lay access road to the observatory site. "For a stretch of 10km, the road is not good and for the last two km there is no road at all. We have requested the highways department to lay the road. The survey work would be completed in two months," Mondal said.

INO authorities have decided not to draw ground water from the locality as it may lead to apprehension among villagers. "Hence, we would be drawing water from Mullaperiyar river by laying pipeline for 15 km," he said.

Mondal said that work on the observatory would commence as soon as the road was laid as they need to transport construction materials. "We are waiting for final approval from the cabinet and sanctioning of funds. We hope that in four to five months we might start the work," he said.

Meanwhile, establishment of the Inter Institutional Centre for High Energy Physics near Madurai Kamaraj University is also under progress.
