Lady Doak College plans eco-friendly satellite campus

MADURAI: The Lady Doak College in Madurai, which has been initiating many methods to ensure that their campus remains eco-friendly, will achieve its goal once its satellite campus starts functioning three years from now.

According to R Gunaseeli, retired professor of the college, the satellite campus is being established about 20 km away from the present campus. The institution was already initiating steps like environmental impact assessment to ensure its success. "We will also be analyzing the flora and fauna of the space reserved for the campus and check the quality of air, water and soil of the new campus," she said.

The new building would be 100% eco-friendly and would be self-sufficient as far as its water needs are concerned. "Trees will not be felled at any cost for the construction of this building," she said.

The college also has a 'waste paper recycle unit' that was started in the year 2009. "We have been successfully running the recycle unit from the past five years. Students from all the departments collect the waste paper and deposit at the unit for recycling," said Gunaseeli.

B Bella, a student of the college said, "We make our own invitation cards using recycled paper. Two types of paper - thick and thin are produced in the unit."

Gunaseeli added, "The recycled unit was set up at a cost of Rs 12 lakh and now we are upgrading the machinery."

N Vinod Kumar, junior researcher at the recycle unit said, "We produce 40 recycled sheets every day by using the shade drying method due to space constraint. The students bring in about 140 to 170 kg of unsorted waste paper every month."

Besides this, the college uses solar panels for lighting the hostel premises and the campus streetlights. In a bid to spread awareness on the importance of trees, the college campus has given botanical names to the trees. The campus has also put an end to fast food and replaced it with fresh juices and traditional food in the college.

Further, the college has taken steps to make the campus zero-waste by converting the waste into bio- degradable waste.

Neutrino Observatory Centre inaugurated at American College

To carry out computer simulation studies

The annual science exhibition and the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) Centre at American College here was inaugurated by Joint Secretary of the University Grants Commission - South Eastern Regional Office (UGC-SERO), G. Srinivas, on Saturday.

The UGC-approved INO Centre will function as a collaborative research lab to carry out computer simulation studies of the Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) of the Neutrino Observatory, which is to come up in Theni district soon.

“The college is one among 23 institutions in the country to have a centre functioning to delve into the functioning of the Neutrino Observatory. Students will get to interact with experts and pursue research in this area,” said S. Stephen Inbanathan of the Physics Department, who will be heading the centre.

The science exhibition had a number of working models conceptualised by students of the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology streams of the college. Spread across three blocks, the expo showcases several scientific principles for the benefit of school students.

Among them, the Zoology Department has created an artificial forest with petrified animals to explain the need for conservation of the ecosystem.

“The spectrometer used by C.V. Raman in his research, a 4-inch Newtonian telescope and an Apple computer, which the college procured in the 1970s, are also among the exhibits,” said the Principal, Davamani Christober.

“The Apple computer was brought to our college in a bullock cart and we have photos showing it,” he added, on a lighter note.

J. Helen Ratna Monica, Bursar, said that it was a learning process for the students to conceptualise the working models. “They have sought to explore new themes which will be of interest to school students as well,” she said. Students of O. C. P. M. Girls Higher Secondary School, who visited the exhibition, said that they liked the working models that explained the principles of electricity and the display of fossilised animals. It will be open for students on September 8 and 9 and to the public on September 10.

Despite having the NIT, BIM, the Bharathidasan university, Trichy has commenced an exclusive Faculty of Engineering & Technology and complemented by the presence of the colossal BHEL, OF, HAPP and a lot more fine self-financed Engineering colleges , has grown into a centre par excellence . visionary and eminent educationalists like Dr Muthukumarasamy and Dr Jegadeesan , were instrumental for this. But consider our Madurai Kamaraj university, we have very few things to be proud of. Right from the VC down to the attender there is rampant influence of politics in appointments. as a consequence , various scams , corruption , scandals erupt time and again bringing ignominy to the university. The present VC is no exception and her stint is ridden with controversies and corruption . the university simply has seen the academic standards falling is the SG to be blamed for appointing unworthy and inefficient persons to these high posts and perhaps this too smacks of a deep conspiracy to restrict the growth of our city. just getting an a+ score in UGC'S NAAC accreditation , does not mean everything is good.
It is strongly urged that our MK university should while upholding its glory should also improve substantially in academics. it is imperative to start courses both in UG & PG LEVELS in the fields of Engineering , Technology, pharmateutical sciences, Geo-Informatics, Geological sciences, Nano-Technology, crop Genetics, FOOD PROCESSING , Packaging Technology, Statistical & actuarial sciences, Bio-Medical engineering which have very good scope in employment as well as in higher research. We Maduraiites should perhaps first shun the diffidence & reluctance and venture out confidently, in the field of Engineering & technology .Madurai does needs its rightful share of all premier educational institutions to be located here , since we are perpetually denied, discriminated and deprived of growth and overall developmemt.

we demand IIT, IIM , AIIMS institutions to be opened, sooner at Madurai. Everything is long overdue and we can't be deceived / mistreated like this forever, by the successive CG & SG. Will our M.P raise this issue in the ongoing Parliament session.

Trichy --"SRIRANGAM"-- the much adored and the most privileged constituency of the former C.M ,is to have one more Govt. Engineering college and a polytechnic. Already Trichy has an overgrowth of Govt / private educational institutions, ane yet more are added, whilst our" Madurai" is perpetually being denied ,any Govt.Engineering college / educational institutions /. there is a big conspiracy to keep us and our growth stalled. what a bumper bonanza and a variety of facilities Srirangam has been getting? unfortunately , when we think of the fate of our "AUNDIPATTI"- constituency of Theni District, one will be only saddened and outraged at the abject neglect. How deceitful, when nothing was ever done by the former successive chief Ministers to the twice C.M 'S constituency of Aundipatti, they shower everything to 'Srirangam".

Madurai certainly needs a Planetarium . The Tamilnadu science forum, under the aegis of the SG, should try starting this,to foster science & technology awareness, temper among the public / citizens of madurai. Earlier during 1982-1987, the MKU, Dept.of Physics had a fine planetarium. Most of the people weren't aware of it, though it hosted its shows to school children. we from YWCA SCHOOL , Madurai had visited the same and watched a wonderful demonstration , there during 1984. hope our Madurai has a good Planetarium and observatory and request the concerned authorities , to bring this facility soon.

we should demand an IIT for Madurai. Recently at Tirupathi and at Mandi(H.P) construction has started. we should press this demand hard or else smart lobbyists from Kovai or Trichy ,which are already teeming with scores of Engg Colleges, would slyly snatch this away. Join the movement to demand IIT forour Madurai, my dear AAM forumers, please.

will the Central Government provide a new IIT and the AIIMS hospital and research centre at Madurai? we have to persistently pitch this demand , since we Maduraiites do deserve it rightfully? if necessary we should impress upon the sitting M.P from Madurai, who is too silent and clueless about what this constituency needs.

Tirupathi, Palakkad and Jammu are the latest cities which are going to have new IITs . while this news is welcome , it is painfully shocking to see our Madurai being denied and neglected a new IIT. our Madurai , having suffered denials, discrimination and neglect at the hands of all the previous regimes in both the CG and SG , deservesan IIT, an AIMS , a Central university and many more institutes of higher education . we deserve it and we should demand for an IIT and a full fledged, functional Anna university campus at Madurai. btw our honourable M.P from Madurai, Mr Goplakrishnan, too should impress upon the authorities concerned to get these institutions. hope the gentleman realises the pressing ned for it, too. lack of good institutes of engineering are hampering the growth and development of Madurai. we the citizens of MADURAI should make a strong plea for starting good educational institutions. unless we achieve those goals , we cannot think of a sustained growth and rapid development of Madurai.

Madurai certainly deserves an IIT from the CG and a Government Engineering college / constituent engg college of MKU. Trichy Bharathidasan University under the vc 'ship of the eminent educationalist Dr Muthukumaran got a Bharathidasan Institute of Technology, despite having the NIT and several S.F Engg colleges. but just compare the case of our Madurai and the inefficient , unprofessional V.C 'S posted to MKU...... the less said the better. all these factors have deteriorated the image and influence of Madurai. if the governments at the state and centre , even if they offer a little interest and facilitate trade and industrial growth, our region can achieve excellent , sustained growth and will earn hefty revenve to the Government. but alas there are very few well-wishers and go-getters from Madurai. things will not be offered in a platter, unless we demend and struggle we can't get anything, like the saying in the bible 'ask unto and you'll be given'.
