Inscription reveals river link, irrigation system
It was in existence during the reign of Pandya King Arikesari
Inscription on a stone removed from the Vaigai river bund has revealed the existence of an ancient irrigation network and river link in Madurai and adjoining areas.
The stone, which is kept in the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple museum, was deciphered by historians S.M. Ratnavel and C. Santhalingam , members of the Pandia Nadu Centre for Historical Research here.
Dates back to 690 AD
“The inscription which dates back to 690 AD suggests that an irrigation project was in existence during the reign of Pandya King Arikesari. This is probably the first instance of evidence detailing existence of irrigation projects in ancient Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Santhalingam says.
“The inscription details a project where water from a channel dug from the Vaigai joins a jungle stream (Kiruthumal river), and is stored in a reservoir. The inscription specifically mentions the irrigation tanks located in the erstwhile Sanadu and Parithikudinadu villages which received water from the reservoir,” explains engineer S.M. Ratnavel.
“It is interesting to note that the water from the presently dry Vaigai river was enjoyed by villages as far as Kallumadai, Veeracholan and Paruthiyur, which are located in the erstwhile Sanadu and Parithikudinadu villages,” he says.
While a lot is being discussed about the present day link-canals between rivers, this inscription confirms that river linking existed long ago, the historians said.
“The inscription has provided valuable evidence which throws light on the fact that the Vaigai river and the Kiruthumal river were linked in the seventh century for an effective irrigation network,” says Mr. Santhalingam.

But now Kirthumal is converted into a mere sewage carrying channel in the city, & the GREAT VAIGAI is used explicitly, deliberately to drain sewage water by the corporation ...
"And the reason for this is Encroachment , Improper Planning due to Urbanisation .... ", giggles everyone as if Madurai has developed into a METRO city ...
The present state is due to the complete negligence of corporation ,public, government .
And to create great awareness among all stakeholders including lethargic officials , so-called engineers , I think this PIL will be an eye-opener ....
PILs for clean-up of 2 rivers
HC orders notice to PWD Secretary and four Collectors
Two public interest litigation (PIL) petitions have been filed in the Madras High Court bench here seeking directions to the Public Works Department (PWD) to clear encroachments and clean up Vaigai and Kiruthumal rivers.
A Division Bench comprising Justices R. Sudhakar and S. Vaidyanathan on Monday ordered notices to the Secretary of the Public Works Department and the Collectors of Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Theni districts based on the petitions filed by K.K. Ramesh, managing trustee of the Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation.
According to Mr.Ramesh, the Kiruthumal and the Vaigai are polluted by sewage and garbage, which also pose a serious threat to the health of the public.
The ancient Kiruthumal river had “disappeared” because of encroachments and pollution, he claimed. Several water resources such as irrigation tanks and irrigation wells had dried up because of pollution and encroachments on the river, he added.
Illegal sand mining activities, pollution and encroachments on Vaigai river had affected agricultural activities in Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Theni districts, Mr.Ramesh claimed.
The State government must clean up the river and take preventive actions against pollution, he pleaded.
The petitioner added that he submitted representations to the Secretary of the PWD on November 14, 2013 to take necessary action and revive the rivers, but no actions were taken. Therefore, he moved the court, he claimed.
The cases were adjourned by two weeks.
