Sankar,

I gone through the details. Many of the info are outdated. They have given data of 2003 and many other information are from the period 2003-2008. Unless and otherwise these data's updated we will never know the real condition on various issues.

South TN is waiting for decades for development. Unfortunately it is confined to few pockets of north TN only.

Frankly speaking, I don't see anything great to happen because of this Mdu-Tuticorin Industrial Project. I wish I am wrong. Time will tell.

Budget unveils schemes to attract investments

To attract investments from large and small players and spread the industrial activities throughout the State, the Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam has announced conducting Global Investors Meet (GIM), a special package for development of land for industrial purposes and a scheme for formation of 10 clusters for micro industries.

Mr. Panneerselvam was presenting the State budget for 2014-15 in the Assembly on Thursday. It was greeted by the trade bodies and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

Since May 2011, the State had attracted investment of Rs.10,660 crore and provided employment to over 10,000 people. It was now planning to hold GIM in October in Chennai to further promote growth of industry and infrastructure in the State, for which Rs.100 crore had been provided in the budget.

Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry secretary general K. Saraswathi said, “If the State does it on a regular basis, the southern districts will get the much-needed boost. Creating an enabling industrial environment is the need of the hour.”

Confederation of Indian Industry-TN chairman Narayan Sethuramon said: “It is a great initiative taken by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. It will showcase Tamil Nadu as a favourable destination for different type of sectors.”

The formation of a special purpose vehicle to implement the Madurai-Tuticorin Industrial Corridor, a recommendation of the CII, would go a long way in bringing more investment into the region and creating employment opportunities, said CII Southern Region Chairman B. Santhanam.

Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Jawahar Vadivelu said the government’s announcement of setting up of a green energy corridor with an outlay of Rs.1,593 crore for evacuation of wind power was in the right direction and would prove to be strategic in making the Tamil Nadu a power surplus State.

Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association president K. Gopalakrishnan welcomed the allocation of Rs.50 crore under the Cluster Development Approach for creating industrial estates for MSME sector.

The SG should primarily act as an enabler and facilitator and direct the investment flowing into manufacturing sector , to Madurai , since this is the need of the hour. once industrial ventures take root here at Madurai it will catalyse further growth. we do not know how long , we have to clamour for industrial and infrastructural growth, since nothing worthwhile is happening.

Hype, hoopla and fanfare surround the every announcement made on the Madurai-Tuticorin industrial corridor. But in reality very little or nothing is being executed by the state Government. This region / plan for industrial growth has evoked little response from the corporates and investors alike. it requires serious effort , effective measures and substantial funding from the state Government , road / railway infrastructure upgradation, power supply augmentation and above all necessary rational incentives for the ventures . It seems both the SG / CG are not intent / inclined to do these tasks and our M.P's too are pathetically ignorant / not serious to realise this excellent plan of growth.

The Madurai-Tuticorin Industrial corridor project has plunged into abyss, since the state Govt. is dragging on. Though there is no dearth of infrastructure , industries are hard to come by, because of lack of promotion and a clear focus. to succeed this venture , should comprise of heavy engineering, chemical, steel structurals plants, pharmateutical industries, which are labour intensive and in turn employ the local workforce. already there has been an exodus of several units to the Gangaikondan industrial estate. so that kind of poaching should never happen. Tuticorin already has quite a lot of industries , so new Industries should be allowed to come up only from Madurai and proceed down south, not the other way round. Logistics and warehousing activities can be based at Tuticorin. first Madurai and surroundings should industrialize first , since we have long been denied of industrialisation. will it ever be realised? waiting eagerly for that moment.

The much touted Madurai-Tuticorin industrial corridor ( what a pompous name) has not even progressed even a little. so sadly, as ever this one too joins the ranks of failed projects for Madurai. nothing moved and nothing changed except rhetoric. so it too dies a slow death, like the (false promised) satellite city project for Madurai. why should we beg with the establishment ? separate statehood will alone solve our problem of under-development and stagnation in industrialisation.

I am sure even in today's global investor meet, this government will not going to showcase M-T industrial corridor to the investors.
