New terminal building at Madurai airport soon
The opening of the newly constructed terminal building at Madurai Airport is awaiting green signal from the Airports Authority of India.
It will become functional within two to three months of getting the approval, according to Mr Sankiah Pandian, Airport Controller, Madurai.
The new terminal building, with an area of 17,000 sq m, has 16 check-in and independent security holds for international and domestic passengers, he said, speaking at the executive committee meeting of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.
The new building has been provided with six escalators and six lifts with separate enclosure for immigration and customs. As it becomes functional, seven flights can be accommodated during peak hour capacity. There are provisions for three aero bridges to take the passengers directly to flights and two of them will become operational within six months.
The car parking area at the airport can accommodate 350 cars, from the present limit of 100 cars. He expressed confidence that with the airport being modernised and maintained on par with international standards, there will be substantial additional flights.
The Senior President of the Chamber, Mr S. Rethinavelu, said that the Chamber, in association with Confederation of Indian Industry, will have parleys with international and domestic airways companies, provide them with details of modern facilities available at the Madurai Airport and induce them to operate new flights to and from Madurai.
International connectivity for Madurai will materialise by December, he added. Mr N. Jegatheesan, President of the Chamber, presided over the meeting.

 Bad News for Madurai
Paramount licence suspended for not meeting minimum fleet requirementThe licence of the Chennai-based Paramount Airways has been suspended by the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Sources told Business Line that the airline will have to meet the minimum fleet requirement and address pending safety issues for the regulator to consider reviving the airline's licence. An airline must have a fleet of at least five aircraft to be considered a scheduled airline. At the moment, Paramount has just one operational aircraft. The airline promoters, however, say that the airline is operating normal services. But inquiries at the Chennai airport show that Paramount is not operating flights till Monday. “The licence was suspended yesterday,” sources said, adding that this was done after a High Court order. Terming the news about the licence suspension as “figment of imagination,” an airline spokesperson told Business Line that the Government had recently cleared the airline's proposal to import 22 aircraft. In May, the Aircraft Acquisition Committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation had given in principle approval for permission to import one Embraer ERJ 170 aircraft, 10 A-321, five Airbus A-320 and six Q 400 Bombardier aircraft. Sources indicated that six aircraft were ready for delivery and the airline had applied for import licence to get these aircraft. The airline earlier had a fleet of five Embraer aircraft, which were used to operate regular flights across the country. However, three aircraft were taken back after a dispute. http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/201 ... 070100.htm

Work at new airport terminal to be over by July
All works related to the new terminal at the Madurai airport will be completed by July 31, said Collector C. Kamaraj here on Thursday. Speaking to reporters after releasing the draft electoral rolls for all the 10 Assembly constituencies, he replied to a pointed query that all major works had been completed at the new terminal. During a recent review of the works completed so far, senior airports authority officials had assured to get things done positively by July end and he hoped that there would not be any further delay.Mr. Kamaraj said that there was an overwhelming response to the two-day special camp for inclusion of eligible applicants in the old-age-pension (OAP) scheme. Currently, the district extended old age pension to 87,500 persons. During the camp, officials received nearly 30,000 applications. After door-to-door scrutiny, the final list would be prepared, in which he expected the number to be around 15,000. Thus, the district would have approximately 1 lakh beneficiaries under the OAP scheme. The recently concluded jamabandhi had received 16,000 applications, out of which, 9,000 were for patta transfers. Orders were being issued by the respective authorities and he hoped that there would not be any backlog. For those applicants who had sought transfers with joint pattas, it might take some time. When his attention was drawn to the dumping of waste in many poromboke lands, Mr. Kamaraj said that some of the major hospitals would be roped in to segregate the waste. The residents of Melamadai had sought common dumping yard to be earmarked somewhere in Melamadai or Vandiyur. After reviewing the performance of ‘uzhavar sandhais,' he said that it had been proposed to open the Anaiyur ‘sandhai' during evenings on an experimental basis as public and farmers preferred a change. Proposal to shift the Melur ‘uzhavar sandhai' to a better location from the present site had been sent to the government for approval, he replied. Madurai Corporation Deputy Commissioner K. Tharpagaraj, Assistant Collector (Training) Venkatesh, PRO S.S. Saravanan were present. http://www.hindu.com/2010/07/03/stories ... 880100.htm

 Some positive news about Paramount
Paramount Airways plans to induct 10 planesChennai-based airline Paramount Airways, whose license was suspended by aviation regulator DGCA last week, plans to induct ten aircraft in its fleet by December this year, an airline official said today. The suspension came as the airline had not met the minimum fleet requirement and addressed certain safety issues for the regulator to consider restoring its license, official sources said. As per the laid down rules, an airline must have a fleet of at least five aircraft to be considered a scheduled air operator. At the moment, Paramount has just one operational aircraft. But the Paramount official said the airline had recently received government permission to import 22 aircraft and the acquisition plan was made to beef up its expansion service which include flights to metros. The official said: "The government has granted us permission to import 22 aircraft. Consequently, we are buying 10 aircraft in this calendar year and the remaining will be acquired next year." Of the 22 aircraft, the purchase of which has been cleared by the government, 12 are Airbus 320, six Bombardier Q-400 and remaining 4 are Embraer-175 planes, the official said. "By December this year, we will induct 10 new aircraft in our fleet. These include two Airbus 320 and 4 Embrarer-175. Besides and 2 two Bombardier 400," he said, adding the delivery of these planes would start as early as August. He said Paramount would use these aircraft to expand its operations across country. "We plan to add six new destinations and launch around 100 flights with these aircraft. While the larger Airbus planes would be deployed on metro routes, the Embraers and Bombardiers aircraf would be used to "strengthen our southern region operations," the official said. To questions, he said the all-business class model of the airline would continue to exist and the Airbus aircraft could have a First Class as well. http://www.business-standard.com/india/ ... /100461/on
